In 2014 the famous Streekmarkt (Farmer’s market) moved from Twijnstraat to Mariaplaats and is held every first Sunday of the month from April to December.
It is held one one of the oldest squares in Utrecht and is really a feast of organic and local produce.
More than 60 producers have carts on the historic location with products you don’t usually find in average supermarkets. You can try the samples, sit down and eat at the tables or stock you shopping bags and bring all the good stuff home.
My tip for a must try is a venison sausage from local producers, who have their own venison farm and send the meat to a trusted butcher to make the sausages. The venison-cranberry one is to die for.
There are carts with oils, bread (they bake it right there in a stone oven), jams, cheeses from dutch producers and delicatessen from France, Spain, Greece and UK.
In some point of the day there is also live music and the market seems more like a party with amazing food and drinks.
The next one is this Sunday (Dec. 7th) and on the Christmas Market Days (Dec. 12-14th). Check all the correct times and dates on their website.
Opened from 11AM till 6PM. Entry is free.
